Cambodia and Myanmar have pledged to further strengthen parliamentary cooperation, high-level exchanges and people-to-people ties during a meeting between National Assembly President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary and Myanmar President H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing in Phnom Penh on Friday evening.

The meeting took place at the National Assembly Palace during the Myanmar President’s State Visit to Cambodia, with the two sides discussing ways to deepen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Samdech Khuon Sudary warmly welcomed H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing and his delegation, describing the visit as an important milestone that would create new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries and their peoples.

She highlighted the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Myanmar, noting that the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1955 and share close cultural traditions and Buddhist heritage.

The National Assembly President stressed the important role of parliamentary cooperation in complementing the work of the two governments and encouraged greater exchanges among parliamentary leaders, friendship groups, women and young parliamentarians, as well as parliamentary secretariat officials.

Both sides also underscored the importance of youth and educational exchanges in helping younger generations understand and preserve the traditional friendship between Cambodia and Myanmar.

Samdech Khuon Sudary welcomed four cooperation documents signed during the State Visit covering the elimination of double taxation, reciprocal investment promotion and protection, cultural cooperation, and media and information cooperation. She called for these commitments to be translated into tangible benefits for both peoples.

She also encouraged broader practical cooperation in education, trade and investment, agriculture, energy, public health, climate change, disaster management, tourism and human resource development.

The Cambodian National Assembly President further stressed the importance of dialogue and peaceful settlement of disputes, saying that conflict deprives countries of development opportunities, while women and children often bear the heaviest burden.

On media and information cooperation, she highlighted the need for responsible information-sharing to counter fake news, maintain public trust and support social stability and lasting peace. She also underlined the importance of ASEAN unity and centrality amid geopolitical uncertainty.

For his part, H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing thanked Samdech Khuon Sudary for the warm welcome and congratulated her on becoming the first woman to serve as President of Cambodia’s National Assembly, commending her leadership in promoting women’s participation in politics.

The Myanmar President reaffirmed his support for closer relations between the two governments, legislatures and peoples, highlighting their shared historical, cultural and religious ties and common interests in agriculture and rural development.

He identified agriculture, education, human resource development, trade, the economy, defence and people-to-people exchanges as important areas for further cooperation, and supported increased exchanges between parliamentary friendship groups, women parliamentarians and young parliamentarians.

H.E. U Min Aung Hlaing also invited Samdech Khuon Sudary to visit Myanmar at a convenient time to further strengthen parliamentary friendship and cooperation.
