Australia and France Urge Cessation of Hostilities and Protection of Civilians
AKP Phnom Penh, December 24, 2025 --
The Australian Government has voiced deep concern over the escalating Cambodia-Thailand border conflict and called on both sides to halt hostilities immediately and prioritise the protection of civilians.
According to a statement released on Dec. 24 by the Australian Embassy in Cambodia, the Australian Government remains deeply concerned about ongoing military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, including the rapid escalation in the scale and intensity of the conflict, the use of heavy destructive weapons and the growing humanitarian impact the fighting is having on both sides.
The Australian Government expressed its condolences to those who have lost family and loved ones, and ask that both sides ensure the protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure and cultural heritage.
“We urge both sides to abide strictly with their obligations under international law, de-escalate tensions, take fast and effective steps to cease hostilities, including through the implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration,” read the statement.
Australia strongly encouraged both sides to engage in good faith in negotiations during the General Border Committee Meeting to achieve a lasting and peaceful resolution, the source stated, welcoming ongoing efforts by ASEAN, Malaysia and the United States to support an end to the conflict.
Meanwhile, H.E. Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, also urged for an immediate ceasefire, stressing that “a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiation.”
