Affected Civilians Educated on the Dangers of Cluster Munitions and Explosive Devices
AKP Phnom Penh, August 20, 2025 --
Civilians affected by the recent armed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand are receiving education on the dangers of cluster munitions and other explosive devices.
According to H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) issued urgent guidance on July 29, 2025, to strengthen outreach education aimed at preventing and mitigating risks for displaced civilians in safety zones.
Following this directive, both national and international operators have jointly launched awareness campaigns in safety zones, while also continuing regular educational activities in local communities, including at the household level, she said.
The spokesperson emphasised that the core objective of these efforts is to enhance public awareness of various types of explosive devices and their dangers—particularly cluster munitions, which are now scattered on the surface in residential areas, schools, and hospitals within affected communities.
She added that operators are also installing warning signs, safety signals, and perimeter fencing to mark contaminated areas, while mobilising rapid response teams to ensure the prompt clearance of explosive devices.
