Cambodia Calls on Thailand to Continue Fostering Positive Steps
AKP Phnom Penh, August 18, 2025 --
The Spokesperson of Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, said today that the situation along the border with Thailand, particularly in Military Regions 4 and 5 covering Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Banteay Meanchey provinces, remains calm.
“Since the ceasefire came into force at midnight on July 28, we have observed gradual positive developments through bilateral discussions between the two countries,” she stated at a press briefing this afternoon.
Notable progress includes the Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on Aug. 7, 2025, and the Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC) on Aug. 16, 2025, she said, adding that the meetings affirmed that the two sides agreed in principle to establish a Coordinating Group (CG) to enhance communication at all levels, including between commanders, border liaison working groups, standing forces in the border areas, and operational units along the Cambodia-Thailand border, with the aim of peacefully resolving issues and avoiding clashes.
“In this spirit, it is essential for both sides to continue fostering this positive momentum toward peace and stability, in order to restore normalcy in bilateral relations across all sectors, and to bring tangible benefits to the peoples of both nations,” she stressed.
Regarding the 18 Cambodian personnel who have been in Thai custody since July 29, 2025, H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata reiterated Cambodia’s call for their immediate release so they can reunite with their families, who have been waiting day and night for their return.
