Cambodia, in collaboration with China, has officially inaugurated the Eastern Causeway of Beng Mealea Temple restored through the funding from the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund, highlighting the shared commitment of both nations to preserving cultural heritage

The launching ceremony took place on July 31 at Beng Mealea Temple, with H.E. Dr. Hang Peou, Director General of the APSARA National Authority, and Mr. LU Qizhi, Director of the Consular Office in Siem Reap from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Cambodia, presiding over the event.

According to APSARA’s official statement, the Eastern Causeway, previously in a state of severe disrepair, has now been fully restored through the collaborative efforts of Cambodian and Chinese conservation teams.

Mr. Lu Qizhi emphasised during the ceremony that this initiative is part of a broader commitment by the Chinese government to support the preservation and restoration of Cambodia’s ancient temples.

He also announced that China has approved a second phase of assistance to further support the conservation of the entire Beng Mealea Temple complex.

H.E. Dr. Hang Peou expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the APSARA National Authority and the Cambodian people for China’s ongoing dedication to safeguarding Khmer cultural heritage.

He noted that China’s support extends beyond Beng Mealea Temple, with restoration efforts also carried out at other significant Angkorian sites, including Chau Say Tevoda, Takeo, and the ongoing conservation of Phimeanakas Temple.

China’s commitment to restoring Khmer heritage reflects a profound respect for cultural legacy as a shared human value, he added.
