AKP Phnom Penh, May 30, 2025 --
The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has initiated a proposal to amend the Law on the Election of Members of the Senate, according to CPP spokesperson H.E. Chea Thyrith.
Speaking at a press conference following a meeting between the CPP and 29 allied political parties, H.E. Chea Thyrith said that Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of both the CPP and the Senate, informed the allied parties of the initiative.
During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen noted that the CPP had assigned a working group and legal experts to assess the feasibility of amending the law. The spokesperson added that the CPP leader emphasised the importance of the amendment, aiming to strengthen the relationship and accountability between senators and their electorates.
The goal is to ensure that senators are more responsive to the needs and concerns of the people, said H.E. Chea Thyrith.
He added that the CPP is still evaluating the proposal and intends to seek input from its allied parties.
The most important objective of this proposed amendment is to make senators more active and engaged with the public, but no final decision has been made yet, the spokesperson underlined.
