Cambodia Rejects Fabricated and Defamatory Reports on Detention and Imprisonment of Thai Nationals
AKP Phnom Penh, December 16, 2025 -- The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia has categorically rejected fabricated and defamatory reports falsely alleging that Cambodian law enforcement authorities have arrested and imprisoned Thai nationals, as well as other distortions of the situation that have misled Thai nationals residing in Cambodia, particularly their family members in the Kingdom of Thailand, through such irresponsible and malicious propaganda.
According to the Ministry’s statement dated Dec. 15, as part of efforts to counter these false narratives, Thai nationals living in Cambodia have continuously posted videos on social media demonstrating their normal daily lives, especially in Poipet city and in various locations throughout Cambodia. There is no cause for concern regarding arrest by Cambodian authorities. Likewise, there have been no threats, intimidation, or acts of violence committed by Cambodian citizens against Thai nationals, despite the tensions between the two countries.
To date, there have been no reports of Cambodian authorities or Cambodian citizens committing unlawful acts against Thai nationals. On the contrary, Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet have consistently issued public guidance calling for non-discrimination and the strict avoidance of any inhumane acts against Thai nationals.
At the same time, Cambodian media outlets and social media users have been actively contributing to the strengthening of a positive people-to-people atmosphere with the Thai side, including Thai nationals residing in Cambodia. In this regard, Cambodian authorities and law enforcement agencies have not restricted freedom of movement or the right of Thai nationals from leaving Cambodia. Although cross- border entry and exit at Cambodia-Thailand water and land border checkpoints has been temporarily suspended, Thai nationals may still depart Cambodia by air or through border checkpoints between Cambodia and other neighboring countries, in order to avoid risks arising from ongoing, indiscriminate, and unpredictable armed attacks of all types and forms along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia further affirmed that Cambodian authorities and law enforcement agencies will continue to fulfill their responsibilities as a civilised state, ensuring security, protecting public safety, and respecting the rights of civilian populations during this period of armed aggression, in full accordance with applicable international law. These responsibilities are carried out without tolerating or inciting acts of violence or violations of the rights of Thai nationals, unlike incidents previously reported in Thailand involving Cambodian nationals.
Accordingly, the Ministry called upon the national and international public, Thai nationals currently residing in Cambodia, and their family members not to be alarmed or misled by fabricated, exaggerated, and defamatory misinformation that is inconsistent with the facts.
