PM Hun Manet: Ceasefire Brings Hope for Both Cambodians and Thais
AKP Phnom Penh, July 28, 2025 --
Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet said this afternoon that the positive outcome of the special meeting in Malaysia benefits both Cambodia and Thailand—especially civilians affected by the recent border clashes.
Speaking at a press conference following the special meeting—hosted by Malaysia and co-organised by the United States, with active participation from the People’s Republic of China—Samdech Thipadei called the ceasefire “a very positive result.”
“Today we had a very good meeting and very good results that we hope will immediately end the fighting which has caused many deaths, injuries, and the displacement of about 300,000 people—around 140,000 on the Cambodian side and 160,000 on the Thai side,” he said.
“I appreciate the outcome and I confidently believe that what we achieved today will provide a lot of opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people on both sides to return to normalcy. It will mark the end of the fighting between our two nations and the beginning of rebuilding trust, confidence, and future cooperation,” he underlined.
Samdech Thipadei expressed hope that the solutions just announced by Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim would serve as a foundation for renewed bilateral dialogue and a step toward future military de-escalation between Cambodia and Thailand.
The Cambodian Premier extended sincere thanks to H.E. Anwar for hosting the urgent and timely meeting, as well as for his personal efforts and initiative to mediate an immediate ceasefire.
He also expressed deep gratitude to Honorable President Donald Trump for his decisive mediation on July 26. “Cambodia values the U.S. Government’s support for peace and appreciates its role in organising this crucial meeting,” he said.
In addition, Samdech Thipadei thanked the Government of China for its effort and active involvement in achieving the positive outcome now agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand.
At the same time, he praised Thai Acting Prime Minister H.E. Phumtham Wechayachai for his constructive role in the dialogue that led to the immediate ceasefire, which takes effect tonight at midnight, and the opening of military-to-military engagement starting tomorrow morning.
For his part, H.E. Phumtham Wechayachai expressed his sincere appreciation to H.E. Prime Minister Anwar, the Government of China, and Honorable President Trump for their concern and support for today’s agreement.
“This reflects Thailand’s commitment to a peaceful resolution to protect our sovereignty and the lives of our people,” he said.
Following five days of armed clashes along the border, Cambodia and Thailand have now agreed to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire beginning at midnight tonight.
