Giant Ibis Nest Search Begins for New Breeding Season in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary
AKP Phnom Penh, May 22, 2025 --
The Biodiversity Monitoring Team of NatureLife Cambodia Organisation is working in close collaboration with rangers from the Rattanakiri Provincial Department of Environment to search for and monitor giant ibises’ nests during the breeding season lasting from May to November.
“During the first nest search in early May 2025, our researchers discovered one active nest still under construction. Additionally, four giant ibises were observed perching near former nesting sites. These previous nest locations have been marked for follow-up visits during the next search mission,” said NatureLife Cambodia in a recent news release.
These findings confirm that Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary remains a critical stronghold for the survival and reproduction of the giant ibis, the source added.
According to NatureLife Cambodia, the REDD+ project is currently being implemented in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary, a landscape rich in natural resources and biodiversity. This sanctuary serves as a vital habitat for several globally threatened species, including the giant ibis – Cambodia’s national bird – which continues to breed here.
Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary, established by a Royal Decree in 1993, covers a total land area of 250,000 hectares, about 80 percent of which is located in Rattanakiri province and the rest 20 percent in Mondulkiri province. It is an important site for the conservation of wildlife and bio-diversity resources, especially rare and endangered bird species, including the Giant Ibis, the national bird of Cambodia.
