Samdech Khuon Sudary Meets Hungarian Ambassador to Discuss Bilateral Ties
AKP Phnom Penh, May 20, 2025 --
Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly, received here at the National Assembly Palace on May 20 a courtesy call from H.E. Tibor Baloghdi, Ambassador of Hungary to Cambodia.
During the meeting, Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed appreciation for Hungary’s continued efforts in deepening Cambodia-Hungary friendship and cooperation, which have brought mutual benefits to both countries and peoples.
She commended the ambassador’s role in fostering high-level exchanges, particularly the recent visit by H.E. Ms. Marta Matrai, First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, which further strengthened inter-parliamentary ties.
Samdech highlighted her upcoming official visit to Hungary in June, and conveyed warm greetings and heartfelt thanks to the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly for the kind invitation to lead a high-level Cambodian parliamentary delegation to Hungary.
Underscoring the value of parliamentary diplomacy, she noted that stronger ties between legislative bodies help build people-to-people connections and support cooperation in trade, tourism, education, and investment.
“In the current global context, strengthening relations between Cambodia and Hungary offers mutual benefits and also supports multilateral cooperation, peace, and shared prosperity,” she said.
In response, Ambassador Baloghdi thanked Samdech and the National Assembly for the warm welcome extended during Deputy Speaker Matrai’s visit, saying she felt a deep emotional connection to Cambodia and its people.
H.E. Ambassador also shared a tentative programme for Samdech’s visit to Hungary, which will include meetings with parliamentary and government leaders, visits to industrial sites, and engagements with the Cambodian community and students.
He briefed Samdech on ongoing cooperation projects, particularly in the areas of energy, business, and agriculture, and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing bilateral ties.
Both sides welcomed the upcoming 70th anniversary of Cambodia-Hungary diplomatic relations in 2026, noting the growing momentum of bilateral engagement through frequent exchanges.
Samdech Khuon Sudary recalled that in 2019, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and now President of the Senate, paid an official visit to Hungary and attended the 3rd Budapest Water Summit. That same year, Hungarian President Janos Ader made a historic state visit to Cambodia.
“Cambodia and Hungary continue to support one another in international forums,” Samdech said.
Looking ahead, she expressed hope to deepen cooperation in key sectors such as trade, education, agriculture, tourism, information technology, industry, environment, and water resources.
She also plans to request increased scholarship opportunities for Cambodian students, in line with the Pentagonal Strategy-Phase I, which places human capital at the centre of development.
Samdech requested the ambassador’s support in encouraging Hungarian investors to explore business opportunities in Cambodia’s strategic sectors.
