Royal Government Pledges Sustainable Development of Mineral Resources
AKP Phnom Penh, May 20, 2025 --
Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s strong commitment to the sustainable development of the country’s mineral resources.
At the inauguration ceremony of the Conch KT Cement (Phnom Penh) Co., Ltd. factory in Kampong Speu province this morning, Samdech Thipadei directed the Ministry of Mines and Energy to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to continue zoning mineral resource areas across the country, ensuring a sustainable development of mineral resources.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of carefully reviewing mineral exploration licenses to prevent environmental degradation and safeguard the livelihoods of local communities. He emphasised that development must bring tangible benefits to surrounding communities while maintaining harmony between companies and residents.
“Cambodia needs income, employment, and socio-economic progress,” he said, “but this must not come at the cost of the environment or social well-being.”
Samdech Thipadei highlighted that within the first 100 days of the Royal Government under the 7th legislature of the National Assembly, Prey Lang was designated as a Red Zone—banning new mining projects in the area. Existing projects in zones without confirmed mineral potential must also be reassessed and withdrawn.
Additionally, the Premier recalled his decision earlier this year to revoke the mining license for a project at Kampong Trach Mountain in Kampot province. The site has since been designated for religious, cultural, and tourism purposes.
He instructed the Ministry of Mines and Energy, in collaboration with other relevant institutions and local authorities, to strictly prevent all forms of illegal mining activities.
Samdech Thipadei also urged all stakeholders to prioritise the safety and welfare of workers in the mining sector.
