PM Remembers Cambodia’s Genocide, Calls for Protection of Peace
AKP Phnom Penh, May 20, 2025 --
The Cambodian Prime Minister remembers the devastated Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime and reminds his fellow Cambodians to never let it recur and to join hands in maintaining peace and harmony in the country.
Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet made the emphasis in an open letter to mark the 8th National Day of Remembrance on May 20 to commemorate the victims of the Khmer Rouge time (from Apr. 17, 1975, to Jan. 6, 1979) Cambodia-wide.
The commemoration does not only mentally console the trauma of surviving victims as well as families who suffered the loss of their loved ones but also contributes to national reconciliation and social harmony in Cambodia and creates awareness of the bitterness so that it will not be repeated.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet recalled the Khmer Rouge, led by its notorious leader Pol Pot, who treated their own people worse than animals.
He took the occasion to thank former Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, currently serving as President of the Senate, for his wisdom, courage, and sacrifice to end the genocide.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s direction on the basis of his Win-Win policy has made possible unity, peace, stability, and development for Cambodia and brought to justice the leadership behind the genocide through the historic successful formation and implementation of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia.
The outcome of the Khmer Rouge trial has been recorded in Cambodia’s modern history as “Peace through Justice and Justice through Peace” in reshaping the new destiny for the country.
The Prime Minister called on all Cambodians to stand strong to protect the hard-earned peace because it is the source of all opportunities in rebuilding families, communities, and the country at large toward further growth and prosperity.
On behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet concluded his letter by dedicating the remembrance to the souls of the victims who lost their lives during the dark regime.
