Information Ministry Spokesperson: Nearly 900 Cases of Fake News Recorded in First Quarter
AKP Phnom Penh, May 01, 2025 --
The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Information has renewed his call for the public to continue to pay attention to the fight against fake news.
Speaking to the AKP, H.E. Tep Asnarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Information said, in the first three months of this year, the ministry’s Anti-Fake News Committee continued to record cases of fake news.
“In the first quarter of 2025, the Ministry’s Anti-Fake News Committee recorded a total of 884 cases of fake news,” he pointed out.
In such a situation, the Spokesperson added that young people, citizens, users and social media’s content creators should pay more attention to increase their vigilance against the negative effects caused by the creation and distribution of fake news that arise from the irresponsible use, the dissemination of information without clear sources, professionalism and proper verification.
“I appeal to all citizens and young people to be good digital citizens today and in the future. Do not create or share fake news, socially harmful news, including fake news created by artificial intelligence (AI),” he said.
“Please verify and check all received information, especially from social media, so that we can all join preventing and ending fake news in our society to protect ourselves, our families, and our nation,” H.E. Tep Asnarith underlined.
According to the spokesperson, all forms of fake news negatively impact security, public order, and politics. Fake news can lead to social instability, incite violence, erode civility, diminish citizens’ trust in leadership, undermine national unity, and potentially trigger widespread chaos and disaster.
Last year, the ministry’s Anti-Fake News Committee recorded a total of 3,651 cases of fake news. To address this growing issue, the Ministry of Information launched an anti-fake news campaign on April 1, 2025, under the theme “Say No to Fake News!” The campaign aims to minimize the spread of misinformation and ultimately eliminate fake news from Cambodia’s social landscape, ensuring information security throughout the Kingdom.
