Phnom Penh's Walk Street Remains a Popular Hub Following Khmer New Year
AKP Phnom Penh, April 21, 2025 --
Even after three days of exuberant Khmer New Year celebrations, Phnom Penh's popular Walk Street continued to attract large crowds on the evening of Sunday, April 20, demonstrating its sustained appeal as a recreational and cultural space.
The atmosphere remained festive along Preah Sisowath Quay as the city had organised captivating traditional performances for the public. Spectators enjoyed classical Khmer dances and the dynamic Bokator martial art show.
Numerous young people actively participated in traditional games and danced with enthusiasm, prolonging the joyful spirit of the New Year.
Ms. Dor Samphors, the Deputy Director of Administration and spokesperson for Phnom Penh Municipality Hall, highlighted that Bokator performance took place at 7 PM on Sunday. She also noted the high visitor turnout on Saturday, with a significant presence of youth engaging in traditional games such as jump rope and handkerchief hide-and-seek, alongside celebratory dancing.
Phnom Penh Governor H.E. Khuong Sreng emphasised the regular curation of Walk Street with diverse cultural activities. These include weekly rotating performances of traditional music, folk dances, circus shows, Chapei Dang Veng storytelling, and a mobile library, ensuring a unique experience for weekend visitors.
Adding to the lively ambiance, the street has also seen an increase in food vendors offering a variety of local treats and snacks. Walk Street is operational every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM along Preah Sisowath Quay, stretching from Street 94 (Baksey Chamkrong Street) to the area in front of the Royal Palace.
This initiative continues to be a significant cultural and recreational focal point for both residents and tourists, further enhancing Phnom Penh’s reputation as a city that embraces its traditions and fosters vibrant celebrations.
