Takeo Ushers in KNY Early with Traditional Oxcart Race
AKP Phnom Penh, April 11, 2025 --
Takeo provincial authorities organised a traditional oxcart race ahead of the Khmer New Year, aiming to preserve and promote Cambodia’s cultural heritage.
The lively event, held in Rokar Khnong commune, Daun Keo city, featured 25 oxcarts from various provinces, including Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Phnom Penh, and Takeo.
Takeo Provincial Governor H.E. Vei Samnang presided over the festivities, joined by Provincial Councilors, Deputy Governors, government officials, teachers, and students.
Each bull was beautifully adorned, and the oxcarts were decorated with colourful flags, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. The bulls raced in circles around the field, cheered on by a large crowd clapping rhythmically, filling the area with joy and excitement.
H.E. Vei Samnang emphasised the importance of preserving Cambodia’s rural traditions for future generations.
“In the past, Cambodian farmers used oxen to plough fields and transport agricultural goods. Today, machines have largely replaced them,” he said. “This event helps preserve our traditional identity. If we don’t continue to organise it, one day it may disappear.”
He added that beyond promoting cultural values, the event brought happiness to local communities and created a joyful atmosphere as the nation prepares to celebrate the Khmer New Year.
Meanwhile, authorities in Kampong Speu province also organised an oxcart race on Monday as part of ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate the region’s cultural heritage.
The event, known for bringing smiles to spectators, offered a vibrant display of Khmer traditions that date back centuries. This year’s race saw enthusiastic participation, with 67 oxcarts competing—44 large oxcarts and 23 smaller ones—from various provinces.
Officials encouraged the organising committee to further expand the event in the coming years, aiming to include hundreds of oxcarts, with even grander designs. The goal is to not only preserve tradition but also to captivate local residents, national and international visitors, and especially younger generations, ensuring the legacy of Khmer culture continues to thrive.
