Cambodia's Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary Poised to Generate Carbon Credits with Major REDD+ Project
AKP Phnom Penh, March 21, 2025 --
A significant REDD+ project within Cambodia's Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary is nearing completion, promising substantial environmental and community benefits.
Covering 134,730 hectares, the project is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 250,000 tonnes annually, specifically 252,319 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e).
NatureLife Cambodia, the organisation leading the initiative, reports on Mar. 21 that the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary is crucial for the livelihoods of more than 16 local communities. These communities depend on the forest for resources and sustenance.
The project is currently undergoing its final verification phase, a crucial step before it can begin generating carbon credits. These credits will play a vital role in funding biodiversity conservation, supporting the local communities, and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
"We are committed to protecting Lomphat's forests for future generations," stated NatureLife Cambodia. "We invite everyone to join us in preserving these vital ecosystems and addressing the challenges of climate change."
The REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus) initiative is a key component of Cambodia's national strategy to mitigate climate change. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by preventing deforestation and forest degradation.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), contributing to global efforts to address climate change while ensuring the sustainable management of Cambodia's forests.
