AKP Phnom Penh, February 27, 2025 -- 

The APSARA National Authority (ANA), in partnership with the Korean Heritage Agency, held a religious ceremony to bless the commencement of restoration work on the northeast corner of Angkor Wat's Bakan Tower, the authority said in a news release on Wednesday.

The event was presided over by ANA Deputy Director General H.E. Long Kosal and attended senior officials and staff from ANA and representatives from the Korean Heritage Agency.

During the ceremony, H.E. Long Kosal emphasised that the ritual was aimed at praying for happiness and success in the next phase of restoration focused on the lower section of the northeast platform of Angkor Wat's Bakan Tower. He noted that nearly all parts of the Bakan Tower have been restored, with the exception of this corner, which is now under the care of the Korean team.

He projected that the restoration efforts would be completed by mid-2026, clarifying that while certain areas of the Bakan Tower are closed to visitors for safety reasons, access to the entire site remains open, albeit with some restrictions in place.

To ensure visitors’ safety during the restoration process, barriers have been erected around the work areas, and signage has been provided to inform tourists about ongoing repairs and any changes to access routes.

Mr. Kim Dongmin, the project manager from the Korean side, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea and the ANA. He conveyed hopes that this project would further strengthen ties between the Korean and Cambodian governments. He reassured attendees of a strong commitment to ensuring the safety of workers and tourists while preserving the beauty of the temple.

In February 2024, H.E. Dr. Hang Peou signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korean Heritage Agency regarding the conservation and restoration efforts for Angkor Wat's Bakan Tower.
