Cambodia Hosts ASEAN IPA Annual Conference
AKP Phnom Penh, February 17, 2025 --
The Intellectual Property Association of Cambodia and the ASEAN Intellectual Property Association (IPA) have co-organised the “2025 ASEAN Intellectual Property Association Annual Conference and Meeting” in Siem Reap province.
The event was held on Feb. 15 under the presidency of H.E. Suon Vichea, Adviser to the Ministry of Commerce and Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, and Mr. Pham Nghiem Xuan Bac, President of the ASEAN IPA, with the participation of representatives of many relevant ministries and institutions.
The conference focused on the topic of enforcement of IP in the digital era – challenges and emerging trends with the aim of contributing to the development of an IP system that can adapt to the fast pace of technological advancement.
The conference was presented by experienced experts and professionals from diverse jurisdictions who shared valuable insights on emerging challenges and trends in IP enforcement int the rapidly digitalised world, providing a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and discussion among participants.
In today’s rapidly evolving world, technologies are advancing at a remarkable pace, causing the existing IP system to struggle to keep up with these rapid advancements, particularly in emerging fields like AI, block-chain, IoT, biotechnology, said Mr. Pham Nghiem Xuan Bac.
The existing IP system will find it difficult to address the rising risks of IP infringement in the digital era, especially with the growth of e-commerce, digital platforms, and virtual spaces, he said, adding that different levels of development among countries may complicate enforcement efforts.
In his keynote address, H.E. Suon Vichea highlighted the evolution of intellectual property management, the establishment of intellectual property legal standards in Cambodia.
He emphasised recent developments in the intellectual property sector, and the development of a digital intellectual property system to facilitate the implementation, management, and provision of intellectual property services in Cambodia.
Cambodia’s National Intellectual Property Policy 2023-2028 launched recently prioritises strengthening the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, especially in the digital context, he said.
